Celebrate Spring Inside; Indoor Plants that Work with AC
This is a very strange time to be celebrating spring. Though plants are blooming outside, we’re all stuck inside. There’s a solution that can help everyone, bring spring inside! Did you know, it’s incredibly beneficial to grow indoor plants? Little plant friendscan do wonders for mental health, creativity, productivity, and even air quality. But, what about the air conditioner? We know how hot it can get in the Central Valley and understand the need for AC during the spring and summer. There are plants that work well with AC, and we’re sharing some of our favorite plants and growing tips.
Best Indoor Plants that Work With AC
When it comes to building an indoor garden, there are a few mainstays that are easy to find and easy to care for. As a bonus, these plants are very forgiving; meaning you can forget to water them for a few weeks, and they will probably be fine.
- Snake Plant – The snake plant is one of the easiest plants to care for. It can thrive in low light situations, so location isn’t a problem. It should also only be watered once its soil is completely dry, once every week or so.
- Spider Plant – The Spider Plant is an incredibly tolerant plant. It only needs to be watered once every week, and can grow in low, or diffused light. You’ll only need to increase watering if you see brown tips on the plant’s leaves.
- Rubber Plant – If you’re looking for a statement piece, consider the rubber plant. As a member of the ficus family, this plant can grow to larger proportions. All they need is a little natural light, some weekly watering, and that’s pretty much it. They require low maintenance and give a high reward.
- ZZ Plant – Zamioculcas zamiifolia, better known as the ZZ plant, is very drought tolerant. Meaning you can forget to water it without killing it. If you’re looking to brighten a room, consider a ZZ plant, even in low light environments, it can reflect the sun’s rays and instantly add an extra shine to any space.
Indoor Plants that are Easy to Care For
When we bring plants into the home, we’re looking for something that’s easy to care for and very low maintenance. The plants we’re sharing today fall into these two categories. If you’re wanting to care for indoor plants that work well with AC, you want plants that only need to be watered once a week at most, require easy to find potting soil, and are hard to hurt. For the plants we’ve listed above, the biggest daily task is misting the leaves. AC can zap humidity and the best way to keep your indoor plants happy and healthy is with a quick spritz every morning.
Location, Location, Location
Just like a home, your plant’s location matters. We all know some people have their favorite spot in the house, whether it’s a reading chair by the window, or a comfy bed, people thrive in certain places—as do plants. Most of the plants in the list above only need low light to flourish, therefore they can be placed in areas such as hallways or bathrooms. If you’re unsure of where your plants want to live, try putting it in different areas of your home and seeing where it grows.
Mind the Humidity
One of the main functions of your home’s AC system is to level out the humidity in your home. While the dryer air could be a problem for most plants, the species listed above do well in this type of environment. But it could pose a problem to both you and your plants if you see a sudden spike in humidity levels. If you notice your air feeling heavy or smelling musty, chances are your humidity is higher than normal and your AC is not functioning properly.
